Activity description
Work as a team to tackle the fast flowing rapids of the Aniene River on adventure rafting excursions an hour outside of Rome.
Head into the heart of the mountaintop village of Subiaco for a wild water rafting excursion that cuts through the stunning landscape of rural Italy. An ancient valley steeped in myth and legend, twist and turn through this untamed and overgrown medieval waterway - passing enchanted grottos and crumbling 14th-century architecture as you paddle through hidden river sections deep in the valley.
Location
Subiaco is situated an hour east of central Rome. The largest city in the upper Aniene Valley, Subiaco is located in the Simbruini Regional Park, the largest protected area in the Lazio region. The city offers many cultural attractions, beginning with the Benedictine monasteries of St. Scholastica and St. Benedict. Rich in historical heritage, it is also home to the Aniene River - a major tributary of the Tiber River that rises in the middle of Simbruini Mountains.
Activity
A two-hour adventure rafting excursion on the Aniene River, meet your instructor at the activity centre in the historical town of Borgo Degli Opifici. Once you are kitted up, you will be given a short safety briefing and head to the embankment area. The first stretch of river will get you working as a team, paddling powerful rapids and taking clear instruction from your in-boat guide. A challenging yet technical descent, discover what the term surfing stands for, what diving in the rapids means, how to move within the river streams and pick up speed as you race the other boats to the end of the route! There will be a shuttle waiting to take you back to the Rafting Centre where you will be able to get changed into dry clothes, recover your belongings and head back to base.
Conditions
Operating during the summer season, conditions on the Aniene River can change depending on water levels and weather. Sections used on this rafting excursion range from class II -III meaning rapids with moderate, irregular waves, strong eddies and currents. Complex manoeuvres and good boat control are required.
